He’d thought that maybe the boards would grow softer

the longer he lay there.

The rest was welcome after the morning

which started so early.


He wondered how the kids were, and their Mom,

He’d see them soon, sometime.

At least they were getting the money he sent them,

surely they were.


His work day would end in just a few more hours.

He’d look forward to that for now.

He would return to this same room with these same others

and try again to sleep.
